Rhod Gilbert: Comedian announces he will be treated for cancer after diagnosis

Comedian Rhod Gilbert has said he is undergoing medical treatment after being diagnosed with cancer.

For years, the 53-year-old Welsh TV and radio host has been raising funds for people with the disease.

But in a Facebook post shared Tuesday (July 14), Gilbert revealed that he is currently himself being treated for an unspecified type of cancer.

“As a proud patron of the Velindre Cancer Center, I have traveled the world, hosted chaotic quizzes and star-studded comedy evenings,” he began.

“I have met and made friends with so many inspiring staff, patients and their families. It’s been a big part of my life for the last 10 years. So even though I never imagined I would be a patient here, I know better than anyone else that I am in the best possible hands. ”

He continued: “The NHS treatment I receive is incredible. I would not wish this on anyone … but who knows, maybe I’ll get to the other end with a new stand-up show and a 40-minute horror of orange squash.

“Thank you all for your support over the last few weeks and months (and years). I disappear for a while and will not comment further, at least not right now as I focus on my recovery.”

During the post, thousands of fans flooded the comments with messages of hope and love.

“Thinking of you mate. Feel better and see you soon xx,” wrote comedian colleague Jason Manford.

Welsh skateboarder Matthew Pritchard wished Gilbert a “quick recovery”.

“Sends best wishes, positive healing vibes and most of all love,” replied one fan. “Hope your treatment and recovery goes well. Take all the time you need.”

In a separate Facebook post, the Cardiff-based Velindre Cancer Center issued a statement in which they wrote: “For over 10 years, Patron Rhod Gilbert has provided exceptional support to the Velindre Cancer Charity and has always been an advocate for the passionate efforts of our Velindre Cancer Center staff, donors and fundraisers.

“Rhod has become a special member of our Velindre family, and we are sure you will help send him your best wishes during this time.”
