Hearings January 6 – latest: Trump says he has made 2024 decision as rumors of the September announcement swirl

Liz Cheney on Donald Trump’s behavior on January 6th

In a new interview with New York magazine, Donald Trump has said he has already made a decision on whether he will run in the 2024 presidential election, which strongly suggests he will – and makes it clear that his main calculation is whether to publish his decision before or after the midterm elections.

The interview comes with a report in Washington Post it says some on Mr Trump’s team are expecting an announcement in September of yet another campaign. Recent polls suggest that while Mr. Trump remains more popular with the GOP base than any other potential candidate, he has lost ground even with them as the hearings on the January 6 Capitol attack unfold.

As even some Fox News-speaking heads acknowledge that the committee’s evidence on January 6 is “breathtaking,” Mr Trump is reportedly furious at the progress of the hearings, watching each session live on television and repeatedly asking aides when they will be over.

The latest television session, which was held this week, featured a bomb revelation from Liz Cheney, which revealed that the select committee has reported Mr Trump to the Justice Department for alleged witness manipulation.

Adam Schiff worried about DoJ’s slow progress

One of the ongoing themes for this summer’s committee hearings on January 6 has been the question of what the Justice Department is doing with the mountain of evidence describing the Trump team’s intrigue to topple the 2020 election. There has long been concern that the department is moving alarming slowly given the urgency of the matter and the weight of evidence, and now it seems that the committee’s impatience is spreading to the public.

When he appeared on MSNBC, Mr. Schiff felt that even though he understood that the DoJ was trying to restore its reputation for political independence, it was becoming clearer that its work was lagging behind the committee’s and even the Fulton County District Attorney in Georgia.

“It is so unprecedented, and I have been a part of many congressional inquiries that have coincided with investigations by the Department of Justice, but it is unprecedented for Congress to be so far ahead of the Department of Justice.”
