The main question coming out of Saraya’s AEW debut at Wednesday’s Dynamite Grand Slam was whether she could still wrestle after her neck injuries in 2016 and 2017.
According to Dave Meltzer in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter, she is still not cleared to do so, but would like to be.
The former Paige made her WWE debut on Wednesday by running in and backing up Athena & AEW Women’s Champion Toni Storm after they were beaten down by Britt Baker, Jamie Hayter and Serena Deeb. She did not become physical in any form.
“We were told that she hadn’t been cleaned very recently, which would explain her not touching anyone but wanting to be cleaned,” Meltzer wrote, noting that she will judge for her family’s WAW promotion on a couple of weeks.
It is unknown if her lack of approval was her own doctors or AEW’s.
The 30-year-old suffered a serious neck injury in June 2016 while in WWE, which required surgery. She was cleared over a year later, and returned in December 2017. However, she took a kick from Sasha Banks less than two weeks later at a house show, which again injured her neck.
WWE’s medical team then refused to clear her, kept her under contract and used her in various roles until her contract expired last July. At that point, AEW contacted her and talks began. It is unknown when the agreement between the two sides was finalized.
